Numerical investigation of the threshold for primordial black hole formation

چکیده
First results of a numerical investigation of primordial black hole formation in the radiation dominated phase of the Early Universe are presented. The simulations follow the gravitational collapse of three different families of high-amplitude density fluctuations imposed at the time of horizon crossing. The threshold for black hole formation, δc ≈ 0.7, is found to be nearly identical for all perturbation families if the control parameter, δ, is chosen as the total excess mass within the initial horizon volume. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the scaling of black hole mass with distance from the formation threshold, known to occur in near-critical gravitational collapse, applies to primordial black hole formation.

Black hole formation in the Friedmann universe: Formulation and computation in numerical relativity
The formation of black holes in the early universe and its cosmological implications have been discussed in a variety of contexts for decades [1]. However, it has long been thought that it would be practically impossible to prove or disprove the existence of these primordial black holes. Recent discoveries of microlensing events by MACHOs of mass ∼ 0.5M in the halo of our galaxy [2] have dramat...
متن کاملNear-Critical Gravitational Collapse and the Initial Mass Function of Primordial Black Holes
The recent discovery of critical phenomena arising in gravitational collapse near the threshold of black hole formation is used to estimate the initial mass function of primordial black holes (PBHs). It is argued that the scaling relation between black hole mass and initial perturbation found for a collapsing radiation fluid in an asymptotically flat space-time also applies to PBH formation in ...
متن کاملCritical collapse of collisionless matter—a numerical investigation
In recent years the threshold of black hole formation in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse has been studied for a variety of matter models. In this paper the corresponding issue is investigated for a matter model significantly different from those considered so far in this context. We study the transition from dispersion to black hole formation in the collapse of collisionless matter...
متن کاملDynamics of Primordial Black Hole Formation
Primordial overdensities seeded, for instance, by inflation or topological defects may collapse to primordial black holes (PBHs) during early radiation-dominated eras if they exceed a critical threshold [1,2]. This particular PBH formation process, which is examined in this paper, occurs when an initially super-horizon size region of order unity overdensity crosses into the horizon and recollap...
متن کاملMagnetic monopoles near the black hole threshold
We present new analytic and numerical results for self-gravitating SU(2)Higgs magnetic monopoles approaching the black hole threshold. Our investigation extends to large Higgs self-coupling, λ, a regime heretofore unexplored. When λ is small, the critical solution where a horizon first appears is extremal Reissner-Nordstrom outside the horizon but has a nonsingular interior. When λ is large, th...
